Osweiler unsurprised by benching, O'Brien won't commit to starter

Brock Osweiler's disappointing season continued Sunday and it resulted in the benching of the Houston Texans' prized offseason signing.

The quarterback with the $72-million contract completed just six of 11 passes for 48 yards and added two interceptions versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. Following his second interception, head coach Bill O'Brien pulled Osweiler from the game.

"It didn't surprise me," Osweiler said of the benching, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

"There was some miscommunication. I made a throw I should have never made. I completely understand why coach did what he did," he said of the pass to receiver DeAndre Hopkins that was picked off by linebacker Telvin Smith.

While Osweiler understood the benching, he certainly wasn't a fan of it.

"As a competitor, any time you don't play well, of course there's disappointment. You feel like you let them down," Osweiler said.

"As a competitor, it's very tough to get pulled out of a game," he added.

Osweiler was replaced by Tom Savage who went 23-of-36 for 260 yards with no turnovers.

"Tom played a phenomenal game," Osweiler conceded.

O'Brien said he had no doubts about turning to Savage, who rescued the Texans in leading them to a 21-20 come from behind victory.

"I've always felt good about Tom," O'Brien said, reports Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle.

The Texans' next game comes Saturday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. Houston is currently tied with the Tennessee Titans for the AFC South division lead. O'Brien said he remains undecided about who will start the critical game for the Texans.

Osweiler suggested that he will be prepared for either scenario.

"If I start, I start," he said.
