Carroll: Wilson, Kearse offered to punt if Ryan can't play in Week 16

Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan might be unable to play in Week 16 after sustaining a concussion on a fake punt late in the fourth quarter of Thursday's win over the Los Angeles Rams, but head coach Pete Carroll apparently has other options.

With Ryan ailing, the likes of quarterback Russell Wilson and wide receiver Jermaine Kearse have offered up their services.

"We'll see," Carroll said, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. "Of course we'll just wait it out with Jon but if he can’t play we'll have to do something and we’ll figure it out. There's a lot of guys who dropped notes in my suggestion box that they can punt. Guys like (Jermaine) Kearse and Russ (Russell Wilson), they all think they can punt if we need it. We'll have some guys. We'll have a punt pass and kick contest this week if we need to."

Carroll said he expects Ryan to be able to suit up against the Arizona Cardinals, but a failure to recover could cause a dilemma for Seattle.

It's unlikely the Seahawks will risk exposing Wilson to more punishment by allowing him to punt. However, they've previously allowed star cornerback Richard Sherman to feature on special teams, so it's possible they view the quarterback as a viable option.

Carroll's decision to fake punt with the win all but assured has come into question, but the head coach defended the call, saying "you're either competing or you’re not."
