Cowboys not considering Romo despite Prescott's struggles

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

As Dak Prescott struggled through the most unimpressive performance of his brief NFL career, the Dallas Cowboys say they never considered replacing their rookie quarterback with Tony Romo.

"No, no, no, no," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after the game when asked if his team considered a switch, according to USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell. "Not at all."

Head coach Jason Garrett shot down a similar question with a one-word answer: "No."

Pressed for detail, Garrett said the Cowboys "just feel good about where Dak is right now with our football team."

Prescott completed less than 50 percent of his passes Sunday with one touchdown and a career-high two interceptions. He's now thrown for less than 200 yards in three straight contests - the only three games on his career he's been below that mark.

Still, benching Prescott after a few subpar performance would probably be rash. The Cowboys know they have some wiggle room; despite Sunday's loss to the New York Giants, they are still on track to earn a first-round bye. Prescott has time to work through this slump.

But if Prescott's struggles extend into next week, then the Cowboys may have to consider the possibility he has hit the rookie wall and truly contemplate what Romo can offer. They must also consider how much playing time Romo would need in order to get up to speed for the playoffs.

And then there's the bigger question of what damage would be done to Prescott if he were to be benched. The rookie is clearly the future of this franchise and perhaps the Cowboys' long-term interests are better served by leaving their full support behind Prescott even if the magic of his rookie season is indeed gone.
