Bills GM: We'll decide after season if Tyrod Taylor will return

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley says no decision has been made about whether quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be back with the team next season.

Whaley said on WGR 550 he'll sit down with coaches after the season to determine Taylor's future, via ESPN's Mike Rodak.

While it's typical for NFL teams to evaluate the entire roster after each season, it's rare to hear a GM make a deliberate choice not to give his starting quarterback a vote of confidence - especially one he gave a six-year, $92-million contract only a few months ago.

The key here is that Taylor's contract includes a number of outs for the Bills and at its core is really a one-year deal with a $27.5-million option for 2017.

Taylor has undeniably struggled this season, particularly in recent weeks, and the Bills could be getting cold feet about paying him such a huge option figure.

That said, it's very hard to see the Bills finding an upgrade of Taylor this offseason, particularly with a draft pick that should be in the middle of the first round.

There's also the possibility that Whaley won't even be around to decide Taylor's future. If the Bills slump to the finish line and miss the playoffs, it's possible both Whaley and head coach Rex Ryan will be fired, leaving Taylor's fate up to their replacements.
