NFL to open up 'Combine Fan Fest'

Once a rather boring series of drills and exercises attended exclusively by team personnel, scouts, and players, the NFL Scouting Combine has become a spectacle.

According to a league memo obtained by USA TODAY, the NFL is planning to make the annual prospect exhibition held in Indianapolis more accessible to fans.

The bench press drill, traditionally held in a private weight room, will be moved to an exhibit hall in the Lucas Oil Stadium convention center with seating included for a small group of fans to cheer on players and watch them interview with media.

There will also be a "Combine Fan Fest" at the Indiana Convention Center similar to the one held during Super Bowl week, where fans can partake in activities separate from the combine itself. A limited number of fans have been allowed at the Scouting Combine since 2012, but this change will allow for a greater number to attend.

The memo stated that the league office "has requested that (the combine) work with various NFL departments to provide more opportunity for fan engagement during the event, both inside and outside Lucas Oil Stadium."

Changes to other drills were not confirmed, nor were specific event schedule changes, although the memo stated there will be modifications to accommodate.

The memo added: "The player schedule has been revised to accommodate these changes, as well as the League’s request to improve the player experience. Player position groups and order will not change, nor will the timing of any events where Club personnel observe or interact with the players."
