Cam Newton wasn't about to let Richard Sherman take shots in the media without issuing a response.

Asked about the recent comments from Sherman, which referenced "karma" having its impact on the Carolina Panthers this season, Newton defended his actions in tearing down a banner belonging to a visiting Seattle Seahawks fan during last year's playoffs.

"Where was the flag at? Was it at our house?" Newton asked Thursday, according to David Newton of ESPN.

The back and forth is particularly notable with the two teams set to do battle Sunday night, but Newton isn't putting much stock into what Sherman has to say.

"It's irrelevant what he says right now," Newton said. "I have a lot of respect for Richard. I don't think that has nothing to do with karma that another opposing team's flag was in my stadium."

A 4-7 start already has Carolina slipping out of playoff contention, while the Seahawks once again find themselves sitting comfortably among the NFL's elite.

Newton and the Panthers will presumably attempt to use the war of words as further motivation to steal a road win and effectively keep their season alive.
