Russell Wilson doesn't share Newton's complaints about officials

While one 6-foot-5, 245-pound quarterback says he doesn't get enough protection from officials, a 5-foot-11, 215-pounder can't complain.

After Cam Newton spoke with commissioner Roger Goodell about how he's treated by official, particularly as a runner, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was asked Friday if he feels like referees treat him differently.

"No, I don't feel that way," Wilson said, according to ESPN's Sheil Kapadia. "I just try to play smart football. I think I've said this before, but if I didn't want to play football, if I didn't want to get hit, I'd be playing tennis. That's just one of those things, you know you're going to get hit, and you know you're going to take some tough hits every once in a while, and you have to hang in there.

"At the same time, it's a rough game, and you always want to make a smart decision and get down, get out of bounds."

Wilson and Newton have been among the most-hit quarterbacks in the league this season while combining for just one drawn roughing-the-passer penalty.

The Seahawks quarterback clarified that he hadn't heard Newton's comments specifically, but believed his comments to be true based on his experience.

"I haven't seen his particular situation," Wilson said. "Honestly, I try to stay away from watching ESPN and all that, but I know for me - trying to get down, slide, get out of bounds, all of that, because those guys are chasing after you."
