Panthers' Cam Newton: Strong second half in Week 6 loss

Newton (concussion) completed 27 of 47 passes for 322 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 41-38 loss to the Saints. He also scored a touchdown and gained one yard on two rushes.

Analysis:

Returning after a one-week absence due a Week 4 concussion, Newton got off to a slow start before coming on to help lead a furious second-half rally. His two-yard rushing score with 2:58 remaining helped bring the Panthers even with the Saints at 38, completing a comeback from a 21-0 deficit. He also hit Devin Funchess and Ed Dickson for scores earlier in the contest, and the former for the two-point conversion that knotted the score up late. However, Newton also killed a promising first-half drive with an interception in the back of the end zone, which would come back to haunt Carolina in a game that was ultimately decided by three points. Notably, the reigning MVP was also more hesitant to take off with the ball than usual, with the two rushing attempts easily his lowest on the season. With the Panthers in a 1-5 hole, Newton will look to kick-start the steep climb back to respectability when he leads Carolina against the Cardinals following a Week 7 bye.
