Panthers' Cam Newton: Set to play, assuming final clearance from neurologist

Newton (concussion) only needs final clearance from an independent neurologist in order to play Sunday in New Orleans and is listed as questionable, Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Analysis:

Newton was a limited practice participant Wednesday and a full participant both Thursday and Friday. Barring a late setback, he isn't expected to have any trouble clearing the final stage of the concussion protocol, ESPN's David Newton reports. Newton could be cleared as soon as Friday afternoon, setting him up for a premium matchup in the SuperDome against a Saints team that's allowing an NFL-worst 32.5 points per game. Newton's top wide receiver, Kelvin Benjamin (knee), is also listed as questionable, but per Bryan Strickland of Panthers.com, head coach Ron Rivera said he feels good about all of the team's questionable players -- a group that includes Newton, Benjamin and Jonathan Stewart (hamstring). Of course, owners will still want to check back before Sunday, as late setbacks with concussions aren't unheard of.
