Staubach on Romo-Prescott: 'Tony deserves to get back in there'

Seemingly everyone has an opinion on who should start at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys when Tony Romo returns, but Hall of Famer Roger Staubach's may count for more.

Staubach, who praised rookie Dak Prescott for his decision-making abilities, thinks the veteran should still have his job when he's healthy.

"It's still all about winning football games," Staubach said, according to Ian O'Connor of ESPN. "And Tony deserves to get back in there eventually. We have a great one in Tony and a future great one in Dak. If I was in the atmosphere of the Cowboy locker room, which Jason (Garrett) will be, he'll get a sense of what's the right thing for the team. They all like Tony, who's a heck of a football player, but they also love Dak right now and what he's doing. He's got the team behind him."

Despite supporting the incumbent, Staubach admits that if Prescott plays well at Lambeau Field and the Cowboys get a win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 6, it will be extremely hard for the organization to go back to Romo.

"If they beat Green Bay, there will be a lot of controversy to it," Staubach said. "I'm a Romo fan, too, so I don't want to say anything against Tony. But the way Dak's going, it's all about the team and what's the best feel for the team at this particular point."

The Cowboys legend was involved in a quarterback controversy during his storied career, being replaced by backup Craig Morton in 1972 due to injury and only getting his job back when he led the team to a late playoff victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

At this point, Romo might need that type of miracle to get his job back.
