Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt will undergo further evaluation on his back to determine whether he'll need surgery, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

It was reported that Watt would be placed on injured reserve Wednesday, but it appears both the team and player are doing their due diligence before ending his season.

Watt underwent surgery on his back in July, but has played in all three games this year, recording 1.5 sacks. It's likely the three-time Defensive Player of the Year was re-injured Thursday against the New England Patriots.

Watt's never missed a game throughout his six-year career.
