Cowboys' Elliott: My fumbles negated production vs. Washington

Brad Mills / USA TODAY Sports

He may be just two games into his career, but Ezekiel Elliott knows that ball security is the most important thing for an NFL running back.

The Dallas Cowboys' rookie running back improved on his yardage total in his Week 2 matchup against the Washington Redskins, but a pair of fumbles has Elliott believing the day was a failure.

"It really doesn’t matter what I did," Elliott told Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram after his team's 27-23 victory. "I had those two fumbles, and that’s what was important."

Elliott had to watch the final seven minutes of the game after fumbling twice, being replaced by Alfred Morris, who scored the game-winning touchdown.

"Obviously you have to protect the football," head coach Jason Garrett said. "That's line one in football, and certainly line one for a running back. He’ll learn from the experiences."

Despite his mistakes, Elliott managed to rush for 83 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown after a 51-yard effort in Week 1.
