Lions place Abdullah on IR; out at least 8 games

The Detroit Lions placed running back Ameer Abdullah on injured reserve with a foot injury Wednesday, the club announced.

The Lions are able to bring one player back from IR, so Abdullah's season isn't officially done yet. Under the new rules, teams don't have to designate that player to return until they're able to return to practice, but Abdullah will be forced to miss a minimum of eight games.

Detroit will likely expand Theo Riddick's role with Abdullah sidelined, as well as increasing rookie Dwayne Washington's snaps.

Abdullah suffered the foot sprain in Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans.

An X-ray was negative, but the running back was reportedly set to visit orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Anderson for a second evaluation of his injury on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old produced a strong performance in Week 1, rushing for 63 yards, while adding another 57 yards receiving, and one touchdown catch.

In a corresponding move, the Lions signed free-agent wide receiver Aaron Dobson.
