Chargers' Antonio Gates: May only play a season or two more

Gates has been contemplating retirement more frequently, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Analysis:

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise given the tight end's advanced age. Gates, who recorded 56 receptions and 630 receiving yards last year -- his lowest figures since 2012 -- missed five games thanks to a litany of injuries as well as a four-game suspension. "It's getting close. I don't know how close. I think about it more now than I ever did. I talk about it more now than I ever did. Days come up and I'm like, 'Oh man, I don't know.'" While the 36-year-old may still put up decent numbers this season with Philip Rivers set to throw him the ball, it would be a surprise to see Gates play past his most recent contract extension, which ends in 2018.
