Jets' Bowles: Geno Smith will be No. 2 QB

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles confirmed that Geno Smith would be the club's backup quarterback on Friday, saying it was "fair to say" that Smith had solidified himself in the role.

In late August, Bowles hinted that Smith's position behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick could be threatened by Bryce Petty.

But it appears that Smith, despite a solid performance from Petty in Week 2 of the preseason, has won the job.

Meanwhile, an MRI revealed that Petty had only suffered a bruised shoulder, and no structural damage in New York's preseason finale.

Bowles said it was too early to say whether Petty will still head to injured reserve.

If Petty was placed on IR, it would solve the Jets' overcrowded quarterback room and allow rookie Christian Hackenberg to act as the No. 3 quarterback behind Fitzpatrick and Smith.
