Cowboys' Tony Romo: Sidelined by back issue

Romo -- who suffered a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra Thursday, is slated to wear a back brace for support over the next few weeks, the Cowboys' official site reports.

Analysis:

While coach Jason Garrett isn't inclined to map out a precise timetable for the QB's return to action, the report does acknowledge that Romo "is likely several weeks away from playing again." While there's been media reports suggesting that Romo is looking at a possible 6-10 week timetable, "others inside the organization are hopeful for a 4-6 week recovery." Either way, as it stands, Dak Prescott remains on track to start at QB for Dallas out of the gate this season. He's currently backed up by Jamiell Showers, though the Cowboys could well add QB depth in the coming days.
