Cowboys' Tony Romo: Diagnosed with broken bone in back

Romo (back) was diagnosed with a fractured vertebra and could be out for 6-to-10 weeks, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports.

Analysis:

Romo injured his back in Thursday's preseason game against Seattle, and while the issue was initially believed to be minor, he woke up feeling stiff Friday morning. He then had an MRI on Friday, leading to the discovery of a broken bone in his back. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett didn't rule out the possibility of an extended absence, but he did point out that Romo has played with fractures in his back before, and thus refused to rule his quarterback out for Week 1, according to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. With Kellen Moore (broken ankle) already expected to miss most of the season, rookie fourth-round selection Dak Prescott could be in line for the Week 1 start. The Cowboys also figure to look at veterans, but a late addition wouldn't necessarily start over the rookie, as the team has been effusive in its praise of Prescott the past month.
