Giants' Darian Thompson: On track to play in opener

Thompson (shoulder) is on track to play in the Giants' Week 1 matchup against the Cowboys. "He will be ready...by him being young, I truly believe that he will be ready to go," said said defensive backs coach Davit Merritt on Thursday.

Analysis:

Although Thompson will sit out of the Giants' third preseason game this weekend, the coaching staff has little doubt that the rookie safety will be ready once the season gets underway. Thompson, a third round selection out of Boise State, suffered a bruised shoulder in the Giants' last preseason game that has him officially listed as week-to-week. Provided that Thompson can remain on track with his recovery, he could start at free safety when the Giants open their season against their division rivals.
