49ers' Colin Kaepernick: Returns to team work at practice

Kaepernick (shoulder) returned to team drills at Monday's practice, setting him up to make his 2016 preseason debut Friday against the Packers, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Analysis:

Kaepernick's return to practice comes as no surprise, after he threw approximately 50 passes during warmups for Saturday's game against the Broncos. While still the favorite to open the season as San Francisco's starter, Blaine Gabbert failed to pull away in Kaepernick's absence, struggling in both of his preseason starts. Head coach Chip Kelly said Monday that he's yet to determine the depth chart for Friday's exhibition.
