Osweiler: Texans debut was 'special'

Brock Osweiler didn't exactly set the world on fire in his first game for the Houston Texans on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, but the young quarterback was happy to have finally made his debut.

"To run on the field with the team for the first time, it was certainly special. Tonight was very special," said Osweiler.

Osweiler, who signed a four-year, $72-million contract with the Texans during free agency, was overly cautious in the club's preseason opener, leading Houston to punt on its first two drives.

He finished the game 4-of-7 for 27 yards and no touchdowns, with his poor ball placement leading to several failed connections.

Backup Tom Savage, however, excelled during an extended stint. The former fourth-round pick completed 14-of-24 attempts for 168 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Texans to a 24-13 victory over the 49ers.

"He's a great teammate," said Osweiler of Savage. "To see him have the success he did tonight, I couldn't be happier for him."

When asked by NFL Media's James Palmer after the game what he needed to improve on before the regular season, Osweiler said he had "a laundry list of things" to work on. He also gushed about the potential Houston's offense has, but said that they kept it "vanilla" in terms of what they attempted to do against the 49ers.

The Texans will hope Osweiler can improve when a little spice is added.
