Jets officially announce signing of Fitzpatrick

And now it's official.

The New York Jets confirmed Thursday the signing of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was the club's starter in 2015, to a new contract.

Fitzpatrick reportedly agreed to a one-year, $12-million deal on Wednesday, thus ending a near five-month standoff between he and the Jets.

The ink on the deal was barely dry before the Jets thrust the veteran back into action, as he was on the field for the team's first practice in training camp.

The re-signing of Fitzpatrick after a career year was thought to be a lock for the Jets, but the two parties were unable to come close to a deal as free agency stretched on.

With the season looming, however, the Jets and Fitzpatrick were finally able to come to terms.

"You can't take away from anything that Ryan’s done this year from a records standpoint or otherwise," head coach Todd Bowles said in January. "He's been great for the guys in the locker room and he knows we want him back and he wants to be back. It's just a matter of working it out."

Fitzpatrick will presumably take the Jets' first-team reps and retake his position as starter, pushing Geno Smith down the depth chart.
