The Columbus city attorney has launched an investigation into the domestic violence claims made against Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott.

"We currently have an open investigation," a representative for the city attorney told TMZ Sports.

"We are collecting as much evidence as possible. Once the investigation is complete, our office will determine if there is sufficient evidence to establish probable cause. Basically, whether there is enough evidence to charge him or not."

The allegations first came to light when Tiffany Thompson, a woman believed to be Elliott's ex-girlfriend, posted a series of photos and captions detailing the ways in which she was abused.

Elliott has denied all such claims, though, and he wasn't arrested following an alleged incident inside a vehicle because neither of the four witnesses said they had seen an assault.

A high-ranking Cowboys source also told Mike Leslie of WFAA that Elliott has messages saved on his phone that show Thompson is attempting to frame him as a result of their breakup.

The NFL is reportedly in the process of gathering facts surrounding the allegations.
