Cardinals add veteran Jenkins to cornerback battle

Cornerback Mike Jenkins signed with the Arizona Cardinals, who released cornerback Carrington Byndom. Financial terms were not disclosed for the eight-year veteran who spent the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jenkins, 31, entered the NFL as a first-round pick by Dallas in 2008 and spent his first five seasons with the Cowboys before playing one season for the Oakland Raiders in 2013. He has started 68 of 101 career regular-season games, with 267 tackles and 10 interceptions. Half of those came in 2009, when he was selected to the Pro Bowl.

Jenkins played in 14 games with five starts last season, finishing with 14 tackles, five passes defenses and three special teams tackles.

He adds depth to a Cardinals secondary that boasts Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson at one corner spot. Jenkins joins the competition for the other spot along with Justin Bethel, who enters training camp as the favorite to win the job, second-year player Cariel Brooks and rookies Brandon Williams and Harlan Miller.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Cardinals are expected to bring in former Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver for a visit next week as well.
