Bosa's agent: Contract structure holding up deal with Chargers

Kamil Krzaczynski / USA TODAY Sports

The possibility of rookie contract holdouts extending into training camp has been all but eliminated in recent years, as first-year players are now subject to a slotted pay system for their first contract.

Occasionally, though, disputes over finer details of an agreement can cause negotiations to drag on longer than expected. That's exactly what's happening between the San Diego Chargers and first-round pass-rusher Joey Bosa as training camp approaches.

Contract language and structure are the main reasons the No. 3 overall pick has still yet to sign his first NFL contract, agent Todd France told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday.

Conventional wisdom suggests the two sides will come to an agreement well in advance of camp, if not relatively soon after players report.

But after a lack of progress led to Bosa sitting out minicamp last week, both sides should be intent on reaching common ground sooner rather than later.

The former Ohio State standout will be expected to take on a key role early on in his debut season. His addition to the defensive front, presumably lining up opposite Melvin Ingram on the edge, has the potential to provide a substantial upgrade both to the pass-rush and run defense.
