San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has been adamant that injured quarterback Colin Kaepernick has not been falling behind Blaine Gabbert in the team's quarterback competition.

Whether that's true or not is yet to be seen, but according to 49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins, there's no telling when the on-field competition will begin.

"I have no idea," Modkins said when asked when he expects Kap to begin practicing, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "We as coaches, our jobs are to coach who's out there on the field practicing. Whenever they say Colin's healthy, I'm sure he'll be there. He's around us, he's in the meetings, he's doing a great job. It's not up to me when he's released, so we'll see.

"I think what's important is that he gets cleared when he's healthy, we'll go from there. So, there's no timetable. Whenever they say he's healthy, he'll be out there."

Kaepernick underwent surgeries on his left shoulder, right thumb, and left knee since he last played in the 2015 season and has been held out of participating in practice throughout offseason workouts.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Kaepernick threw passes on the Niners' practice field for the first time on Thursday, but still has not been cleared to practice.

It's likely the team will hold out on pushing for a return until training camp to prevent further injury, but with the installation of Kelly's unique offense, Gabbert could get a serious leg up on his fellow competitor.
