Bills' Shaq Lawson: Shoulder surgery scheduled

Lawson will undergo preemptive surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday.

Analysis:

Lawson's labrum issue was initially flagged during the pre-draft process as a concern, and although he and his representatives believed no surgery would be necessary until next offseason, "an occurrence of the condition" last week resulted in the Bills' medical staff determining that preemptive surgery would best serve his long-term health. So although Lawson could have continued through the offseason program, he'll instead take care of his shoulder problem as soon as possible. At the moment, a timetable for Lawson's return is being mapped out, but a sideline stint of 4-to-6 months was previously suggested. If that outlook prevails, Lawson will likely begin his rookie season on the PUP list. Projected as one of Buffalo's starting outside linebackers, Lawson's absence could represent a considerable blow to the defense, and if he were to miss time, Manny Lawson should see more snaps opposite Jerry Hughes (upper body).
