Bears to keep Jay Cutler in same offense under new coordinator

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has seen several offensive coordinators come and go during his career.

Dowell Loggains will be his sixth play-caller in eight years, a staggering number considering continuity is so coveted for the game's hardest position. But Loggains is touting his familiarity with Cutler from being his position coach in 2015 as a reason for fans not to hit the panic button over a new offense.

"I think (Cutler and I) have a mutual respect," Loggains said Friday, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. "I think I respect him, and he respects me. I think that when you have that mutual respect, then all dialogue is legal. So whatever I say to him, he knows where it's coming from and vice versa."

The offense, Loggains says, isn't going to change much from the one departing Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase installed a year ago. That fact should allow Cutler to continue improving in the offense he struggled in at times last season.

"Well, the shell of the offense will stay the same," Loggains said. "It's been the same since coach John Fox has been a head coach. The language and everything will be the same, but it will evolve like it would have if Adam would have been here."

Despite his drop-off in overall production, Cutler made strides in 2015 with a career-high passer rating of 92.3 and a decrease in interceptions from 18 to 11. Loggains isn't about to take credit for his quarterback's improvements, though.

"I don't think Adam (Gase) or I should take the credit," he said. "I think Jay made the choice to improve and work on the things that we asked him to work on. And I hope that process continues. I'm looking forward to coaching him every day and continuing the process we've made and build off that where we ended last year, but definitely we could be better."
