The Kansas City Chiefs announced Tuesday that they released safety Jimmy Wilson.

Wilson, signed to a one-year deal late in free agency, was expected to take on a depth role as part of the Chiefs' defensive backfield heading into 2016.

Though the reason for his release is unclear, he again hits the open market and is immediately able to sign with another team.

The 29-year-old racked up 44 tackles, one sack, and one interception across 13 games for the San Diego Chargers in 2015.
