Report: Jets decline Dee Milliner's 5th-year option

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

A disappointing start to Dee Milliner's pro career will reportedly have him heading for free agency next March.

The New York Jets declined the fifth-year option on the cornerback's initial rookie contract, allowing him to hit the open market following the upcoming season, reports Rich Cimini of ESPN.

After a relatively strong rookie year in which he started 12 games and hauled in three interceptions, injuries have since forced Milliner to miss all but eight games since.

Though it's possible he earns a key role in his fourth year, the Jets evidently haven't seen enough to warrant a $11.9-million salary that would have been fully guaranteed.

Milliner will enter training camp this summer as one of several cornerbacks competing for a starting spot opposite Darrelle Revis.
