Report: Texans wanted to draft Karl Joseph

The Houston Texans added another weapon for Brock Osweiler and a running mate for DeAndre Hopkins by selecting wide receiver Will Fuller with the 21st overall pick, but he was reportedly not the prospect they most wanted to get their hands on.

The Texans traded up to get the former Notre Dame standout, but were actually targeting safety Karl Joseph, who they badly wanted to capture, sources told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

The plan was scuppered, however, when the Oakland Raiders surprisingly selected Joseph with the 14th overall pick.

That could mean the Texans will look to add another safety with a Day 2 pick, with Vonn Bell, Jeremy Cash, and Jayron Kearse among the top prospects left at the position.

Joseph is currently recovering from a torn ACL, but would have been an immediate upgrade for Houston, which currently has Andre Hal and Eddie Pleasant atop its depth chart.

Instead, he'll be another piece for what is becoming a formidable-looking Raiders defense.
