The Detroit Lions selected defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson out of Alabama in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft on Friday, 46th overall.

Robinson will compete against Tyrunn Walker for a spot in the starting lineup, and could make a formidable pairing alongside veteran Haloti Ngata.

At 21, Robinson is one of the most physically imposing players in the draft and possesses the strength to overpower NFL offensive linemen.

Robinson specializes against the run and will likely be used on the first two downs. While he needs to improve against the pass, he possesses the ability to become a formidable pass-rusher with some refinement.

A'Shawn Robinson Bio

Position: DT
School: Alabama
College Experience: Junior
Height: 6-4
Weight: 307 lbs.

Strengths

  • Has ideal physical gifts, with the kind of lower-body strength that allows him to plant a firm base and makes him hard to move.
  • At just 21, Robinson is considered one of the higher-upside players in the draft.
  • Solid instincts allow quick recognition in the pass and run game.
  • Athleticism and hands should make transition to NFL easier.
  • Has significant pass-rush potential.

Weaknesses

  • Plays upright and has less polished technique than he should.
  • Did not turn talent into production at the level he could've in college, tallying just 3.5 sacks over his sophomore and junior seasons.
  • Gets lost upfield at times, losing outside containment on athletic quarterbacks or slow-developing plays to the outside.
