Jaguars have 'continuing interest' in Josh Norman, sides far apart

As the list of teams serious about signing free-agent cornerback Josh Norman dwindles, the Jacksonville Jaguars are hanging around.

"There is a continuing interest," general manager Dave Caldwell said in a radio interview Friday. "We do our due diligence. We do our homework."

Caldwell added that the Jaguars have yet to make a formal offer to Norman, and indicated there is a sizable gap between the salary Norman is seeking and what the Jaguars are willing to offer.

Norman, whose franchise tag was rescinded by the Carolina Panthers in shocking fashion two days ago, is scheduled to meet with the Washington Redskins on Friday. Some expect a deal could be done in short order.

Beyond the Redskins, the San Francisco 49ers are believed to have the most interest. Several teams have sniffed around, but it appears most aren't especially interested in or are incapable of committing $15 million to $16 million annually on a five-year deal (which is believed to be what Norman is seeking) at this stage of the offseason.

The Jaguars still have the salary cap space to make a Norman deal happen. If Caldwell gets serious of making it happen, he has the ammunition to do so. For now, it sounds unlikely.
