Browns won't commit to RG3 as starter despite trade down to No. 8
Conventional wisdom would suggest that the Cleveland Browns won't select a quarterback with their first-round pick after trading down to the eighth overall slot.
The Browns aren't buying into that logic.
Many assumed when the Browns traded with the Philadelphia Eagles that the team would commit to Robert Griffin III as their starter for the 2016 season.
Browns vice president of football operations Sashi Brown disagreed with that notion Thursday.
"We haven't solved that (position) by any stretch by acquiring Griffin, but that's certainly one of the things that we were able to accomplish this offseason," Brown said, according to ESPN's Pat McManamon.
Griffin will be competing against Josh McCown, Connor Shaw, and Austin Davis for the starter's role next fall. Browns head coach Hue Jackson appeared confident in the quartet but played coy about the team's draft plans.
"No one said that we don't have a quarterback," Jackson said. "We have four guys that we will get an opportunity to coach. I never said that we will not add a quarterback as we continue to move forward. We'll see how the draft unfolds."
Griffin agreed that he needs to earn the starting role outright.
"The only person who doesn't have to really earn it is (left tackle) Joe Thomas," Griffin said. "He's got nine Pro Bowls to speak to that."
With a NFL-best 12 draft picks, the Browns will be one of the most compelling teams to watch next week.
