The New York Jets' rumored interest in free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer is legitimate, a source told ESPN's Rich Cimini.

The Jets will reportedly welcome Hoyer to town for a visit Tuesday, a day after he was formally given his walking papers by the Houston Texans.

The Jets' interest in Hoyer comes amid protracted negotiations with Ryan Fitzpatrick, the team's starting passer last season. The two sides reportedly remain far apart in contract talks, with Fitzpatrick said to be asking for $16 million per season. Hoyer's visit could be an indication the Jets are pessimistic a deal with Fitzpatrick will get done.

It could also be a leverage play. With nearly every team set at quarterback, and those that aren't likely looking to address the need via the draft, Fitzpatrick is low on options. Perhaps the Jets' flirtation with Hoyer will nudge him toward accepting less money to return to the Big Apple.
