Panthers trade up to select CB Daryl Worley in 3rd round

Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers traded up to select cornerback Daryl Worley out of West Virginia in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 77th overall.

In moving up to the 93rd overall pick, and also acquiring the 141st selection, the Panthers sent the Cleveland Browns a package of picks at No. 93, No. 129, and No. 168.

Worley, along with the pick of James Bradberry the round prior, adds some much-needed depth and competition to the cornerback position following Carolina's surprise decision to rescind Josh Norman's franchise tag.

Daryl Worley Bio

Strengths

  • Length. Ideal size for an NFL corner, standing at 6-foot-1 with over 33-inch arms.
  • Strong hands. Uses hands to re-route receivers and knock the ball out of their grasp. Recorded 12 pass deflections and six interceptions in junior season.
  • Ball skills. Sits down on receivers when ball is in the air and uses well-timed leap and outstanding hands to break it up or take it away. [NFL.com]

Weaknesses

  • Character concerns. Received a two-game suspension and a misdemeanor-battery charge for assaulting a woman at a night club during his sophomore season. Suspended for the final game of his college career for academic reasons.
  • Stiff. Struggles to flip his hips downfield and change direction with fluidity.
  • Disappointing run-defender. Shies away from tackles in the run game, and isn't nearly as physical as expected for a large corner.
