Leicester's Fuchs has ambitions to become an NFL kicker

Leicester City left-back Christian Fuchs has been a defensive stalwart since his free transfer to the Premier League last summer, but his ambitions aren't just confined to spherical balls.

The Austrian's family life lies in Manhattan, and the 29-year-old has had his head turned by football of the American variety.

"I have this ambition to be an NFL kicker," he told Sky Sports.

"If NFL managers want a footballer in their team, I know I can kick a 60-yard field goal. Let's see, if you don't dream you won't achieve anything."

Fuchs' wife heads up his New York soccer academy in the United States, where she lives with their children. He admits feeling the strain of being away from his loved ones, despite his on-pitch successes - Leicester unexpectedly sits atop the Premier League - serving as a welcome distraction.

"I have a family in New York. I have a wife and two kids ... I am (a) person who needs the family around and I am a family guy. It's pretty tough," he said.

Fuchs' NFL interest increased earlier this year when the Foxes pledged their support for the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl. The former FC Schalke 04 man would like to get more involved in the game after enjoying a training session with the Bank of America Stadium franchise earlier this year.

Fuchs has two years remaining on his contract in the east Midlands.

"I'm already thinking about what's after my career. I will be in America and I will move to be with my family. I simply want to do something. I can't just be laying on the couch because that's so not me."

The 74-time Austria international would follow several sportsmen who have swapped soccer for American football. Clive Allen was an England international who went on to represent the now-defunct London Monarchs as a place-kicker. More recently, former MLS forward Devin Barclay went on to represent Ohio State as kicker, and Menelik Watson is an offensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders after failing to make the grade at Manchester City through injury concerns.
