Vanderbilt was said to be targeting VCU head coach Will Wade, but he signed a new eight-year deal with the Rams earlier Tuesday.
Capel, 41, was previously a head coach at VCU and Oklahoma. He's been on Mike Krzyzewski's staff since the summer of 2011.
