England's Jack Butland confirms Euro absence
Stoke City and England international shot-stopper Jack Butland conceded that the broken ankle he suffered in Saturday's 3-2 victory over world champ Germany will force him to miss the Euro 2016 tournament.
"I won't be able to be part of that experience now," Butland told the club's website, confirming he will not deputize first-choice 'keeper Joe Hart this summer in France.
Butland will undergo surgery Tuesday.
"I don't think (the European Championships are) going to be an option for me now to be honest because I won't be able to play again between now and the end of the season."

A setback for both club and country, the 23-year-old had emerged this season as the Three Lions' future No. 1 while guiding the Potters to a promising season under Mark Hughes. Sitting in eighth, four points adrift of West Ham and a coveted Europa League spot with seven matches to play, Butland's absence will be a massive blow to the club's continental ambitions.
"It isn't the challenge that I expected or wanted this summer but I am going to approach it with the right mentality and learn from it, both physically and mentally," Butland said.
"I have not had to deal with an injury like this before so I will come out of it as a stronger person and a better goalkeeper, and look forward to the start of next season."
