Davis confirms he'll miss Rio Olympics, expects to be out 4-5 months

New Orleans Pelicans power forward Anthony Davis confirmed Monday that his impending knee and shoulder surgeries will prevent him from playing for Team USA at this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Davis, who said he's been playing through a torn labrum in his left shoulder for the past three years, expects to be sidelined four-to-five months.

That timeline should put him on track to return for next season's training camp, though Davis wouldn't say for sure whether or not he'd be there. He did say he expects to be back at 100 percent by the time the 2016-17 campaign kicks off.

A year after leading New Orleans to the playoffs on the strength of an MVP-worthy performance, Davis' fourth NBA season ends in disappointment after a career-low 61 games, with the Pelicans sitting at 26-43. Davis also stands to lose out on an estimated $24-million bonus if he's not named to an All-NBA team at season's end.

He finished the year with impressive averages of 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and two blocks, but saw his PER dip from a historically good 30.8 to a simply very good 25.1.
