Los Angeles named 2018 NBA All-Star host
Alas, a few more parties in L.A are forthcoming.
The NBA announced Tuesday that All-Star weekend will be held in Los Angeles in 2018, continuing a recent tradition of having the annual midseason showcase in Hollywood every seven years. The event was held at Staples Center in both 2004 and 2011.
"Los Angeles is known for first-class hospitality and entertainment, making it the perfect host for NBA All-Star," Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday.
"The city is home to some of the most passionate basketball fans in addition to extraordinary facilities, including Staples Center and L.A. Live. We thank Mayor Garcetti, Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer, Lakers President and Co-Owner Jeanie Buss and AEG President and CEO Dan Beckerman for their support in bringing All-Star back to L.A."
Los Angeles beat out Indianapolis and Miami on the league's short list of candidates for 2018, according to USA Today's Sam Amick.
"Since becoming part of L.A. through my ownership of the Clippers, I've witnessed firsthand the passion this city has for basketball and celebrating world-class talent, and I can't wait to see what's in store for both players and fans during NBA All-Star 2018," said Ballmer.
Sacramento also reportedly made a bid, hoping to be rewarded for the completion of the Kings' new arena, Golden 1 Center, which is set to open this October. Sacramento has instead shifted its focus to a 2019 bid, Amick reports.
Charlotte, N.C., will host the festivities in 2017.
