Following suspension, Dolphins open to Dion Jordan returning

Defensive end Dion Jordan hasn't been what the Miami Dolphins were looking for when they traded up to pick him third overall in 2013.

Jordan is a month away from finishing his year-long suspension for repeatedly violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. His suspension has included up to 10 drug tests per month and his reinstatement is not guaranteed.

However, the Dolphins are open to the idea of Jordan returning to the team next season, reports Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier commented to the Miami Herald in January about what Jordan would have to do to earn a spot on the team.

“I think everyone needs to prove something. We talk about creating a competitive environment with guys that want to be a Miami Dolphin and want to be here and love the game and compete. Obviously, what happens whether he gets reinstated or not from that point we’ll make that decision once we see him and get him in the building.”

The Dolphins lost defensive end Olivier Vernon to the New York Giants, while Cameron Wake is coming off an Achilles injury. Jordan should have an opportunity to earn a roster spot, but anything he brings to the table at this point will be viewed as a bonus by the Dolphins.

Jordan's college teammate Kiko Alonso was recently traded to Miami and believes he is "going to come back and have a chip on his shoulder."
