Report: Jets, Fitzpatrick remain 'far apart' in contract talks
The New York Jets and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick have reportedly made little progress in their negotiations for a new deal.
The two parties are still "far apart" in terms of salary, and Fitzpatrick is testing his value by actively seeking other offers now that free agency has opened, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
It was expected Fitzpatrick would return to the Jets following one of the most productive seasons of his career, in which he threw for 31 touchdowns and just under 4,000 yards.
However, it appears the significant deals received by Sam Bradford and Brock Osweiler recently, which essentially set the mid-tier quarterback market at around $18 million per year, has caused Fitzgerald to stand strong in talks with the Jets in order to get a deal more in line with those contracts.
At 33 years old, and with an inconsistent career, Fitzpatrick might not have the leverage to force such a deal. However, with several teams still searching for a veteran passer - including the Denver Broncos - Fitzpatrick could find himself in demand
