Colts sign Dwayne Allen to 4-year, reported $29.4M extension
The Indianapolis Colts have signed Dwayne Allen to a four-year contract extension worth $29.4 million, the team confirmed.
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio was first to report on the deal.
Allen caught 16 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in 13 games last year.
"I knew this was home and with their offer they confirmed that to me," Allen told ESPN's Josina Anderson.
"From Jim Irsay and his family on down we are very pleased to announce the re-signing of Dwayne Allen," Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement. "Besides the broad skill set and overall talent level he brings, Dwayne's tenacity and physicality has always been what has set him apart from the beginning. His genuine love for the people of this community, its fans, and for the game of football is what makes him special."
As a result of the extension, it's unlikely fellow tight end Coby Fleener will be retained. Fleener, who recorded 54 receptions for 491 yards and three touchdowns last season, will become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday.
The new deal may indicate the Colts plan to expand Allen's role as a receiver, as he's been utilized mainly as a blocker despite his excellent athleticism.
