Report: Knicks won't sign Jimmer Fredette to 2nd 10-day contract

The New York Knicks were hoping Jimmer Fredette's incendiary D-League exploits might translate to the NBA level, but it proved to be a pipe dream.

The 27-year-old shooting guard - who's spent the season with New York's D-League affiliate - signed a 10-day contract with the Knicks last month, but with it expiring Wednesday, the team will not sign him to another, according to ESPN's Ian Begley.

Knicks fans embraced (if somewhat facetiously) the arrival of the onetime prodigy and college scoring legend, even chanting his name during garbage time of some games. In all, he played just five minutes during the length of his contract, taking and making one 3-pointer.

Knicks head coach Kurt Rambis pointed to a lack of size and defensive intensity as his reason for benching Fredette, who Rambis said got "pushed around a little" in practice.

Fredette has entirely failed to live up to the hype that got him selected 10th overall in the 2011 draft, but he's shot the ball relatively well in his career, connecting on 38.1 of his 3-point attempts. In 30 games for the Westchester Knicks this season, he's averaged 21.8 points and 4.8 assists, while shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from beyond the arc.

It's entirely possible he'll get a look from another team, but for the time being he is expected to return to Westchester and suit up Wednesday night against the Canton Charge.

The Knicks, meanwhile, are considering signing recently waived San Antonio Spurs guard Ray McCallum or former Portland Trail Blazers point guard Tim Frazier to a 10-day to fill their 15th roster spot, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.
