Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein delivered quite the surprise to camp Thursday.

With the team huddled around the mound for a meeting, Epstein walked Dexter Fowler to the field. Many players said they believed Fowler had come to say goodbye, however it was to announce that he hadn't signed with the Baltimore Orioles, but rather he just inked a one-year deal to return to Chicago.

"I owed it to the boys to tell them first," Fowler told reporters. "My heart's here. "I feel like the Cubs, they treated me with the utmost respect. With the offseason moves they made, you've got to go with what's comfortable."

It was reported earlier this week that Fowler and the Orioles agreed to a three-year deal, though talks broke down after Baltimore general manager Dan Duquette refused to include an opt-out into Fowler's contract.

"I didn't give (the Orioles) a verbal agreement," Fowler said. "I don't know where that came from. It didn't come from our camp. It kind of put me in a difficult situation. Epstein made a good offer, and you come back to what you know."
