Report: Redskins delaying RG3's release in hopes of finding trade partner
The Washington Redskins have yet to part ways with quarterback Robert Griffin III despite it being clear that he's no longer part of the franchise's plans.
The reasoning for this is because the Redskins are still hoping to find a team willing to trade for Griffin, sources told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Washington took up the fifth-year option on Griffin's rookie deal, meaning he is slated to cost just over $16 million towards the 2016 cap.
However, Griffin would be willing to restructure his contract if the right team attempted to trade for him, reports Florio.
The Redskins can hold out until the start of the new league year on March 9, but Griffin's contract, injury history, and lack of development will likely mean Washington would only be able to gain a late-round pick for the 26-year-old.
