Colorado Rapids acquire Conor Doyle in trade with D.C. United

D.C. United announced Tuesday the club has traded Irish-American forward Conor Doyle to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for the team's natural 2017 third-round draft pick.

"Conor was a real team player who provided us with depth at multiple positions during the past three seasons, and we would like to thank him for all of his contributions to the club both on and off the field," D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement.

"This was a necessary move for us to make to provide roster and salary budget space for a future move. We wish Conor the best of luck with his new team and with his career moving forward."

Doyle, 24, joined D.C. United in 2013 and made 56 appearances for the side over three seasons, scoring 19 goals - 10 of which came last season - in just 25 games. He'll join a Rapids team currently undergoing a rebirth, having moved out 14 players this offseason and brought in several new pieces, including Designated Player Shkelzen Gashi.

"We believe Conor is an excellent addition to our roster," Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a statement. "Although he is still young, he already has wide experience in MLS and Europe. His ability to cover a number of offensive positions gives us strength in depth as we approach the new campaign."

Despite being born in McKinney, Texas, Doyle made one appearance with the Republic of Ireland's Under-21 team in 2011. He also earned one cap with the United States Under-23 side in the same year.

Doyle is not related to Rapids striker Kevin Doyle.
