Counterattack: Montreal Has Lightning in a Bottle with Ben Scrivens

Here are the top against-the-grain selections for Tuesday's 12-game slate:

G Ben Scrivens, Canadiens (vs. Lightning)

After two straight performances in which he's allowed just one goal, the beleaguered Canadiens will hand Scrivens another start following the team's first two-game winning streak since late November.

The journeyman had lost his first four starts as a Hab, but Scrivens, who once recorded a 59-save shutout as a King in 2013-14, seems to be finding his footing with home wins over Edmonton and Carolina.

Tampa Bay has lost its last two road games, most recently a 5-1 defeat in Ottawa on Monday, and has managed just three goals across those contests. With Montreal not far removed from an extended slump, faith in its netminders to return another win will likely be limited. Scrivens is one of the cheaper goaltenders Tuesday, and has stopped 57 shots in his last two games.

D John Carlson, Capitals (at Predators)

Before going down with a lower body injury on Dec. 26 and subsequently missing a month, Carlson had 27 points in 34 games. He's failed to get on the score sheet in five games since returning to the lineup, but registered 10 shots and nine blocks in that span, and is gradually getting back into the heavy minutes load he shouldered earlier in the season.

While Carlson's price has dropped, he can't return value without scoring points. Though Nashville G Pekka Rinne has won four of his last six starts, his 2.50 GAA and .904 save percentage are worse than his career norms. The Predators allowed six goals to the Flyers on Thursday, and with Washington has the NHL's highest-scoring offense, Carlson could have a breakout game.

W Zach Parise, Wild (vs. Stars)

Parise's high price and recent cold spell (just a goal and an assist over his last 10 games) likely won't attract many DFS investors, especially on such a large slate - but he's an intriguing option against the Stars.

Dallas has allowed at least three goals in each of its last three games; that streak extends to five games if only road contests are considered. Despite Parise's slump, he's still on the top line and first power-play unit, and though he's not scoring much, he does have 35 shots in his last 10 games.

C Nazem Kadri, Maple Leafs (at Flames)

Someone has to score for the injury-riddled Leafs, and it may as well be Kadri, who has six points and 42 shots over his last 10 games. Though he ranks eighth overall with 189 total shots, he has a shooting percentage of just 5.8 per cent, with 11 goals on the season.

Though Flames starting goaltender Jonas Hiller has played well of late, Calgary still allows the fifth-most goals per game (2.90), and Kadri is assured of top-line and first-unit power-play duties. Given his propensity to shoot, opportunities to get on the score sheet will be there.
