A day after racist chants rained down from the stands, Lazio was fined €50,000 on Thursday and ordered to close its main supporters' section, the Curva Nord, at the Stadio Olimpico for two matches.

The punishments, announced by Serie A, are a result of Wednesday's match when supporters directed racial abuse at Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Lazio was also fined a further €15,000 for derogatory chants directed at Napoli supporters, and will see two sections of the stadium closed off to supporters during Saturday's contest against Genoa.

Referee Massimiliano Irrati made the decision to halt the match in the 68th minute as chants from Lazio supporters persisted. The game eventually resumed three minutes later.

Koulibaly took to social media Thursday to offer his gratitude to Irrati for having the courage to stop the match, and thanked players and fans for their support in the aftermath of the incident, which has garnered plenty of attention throughout the football world.
