Lee Mason reportedly has Ronald Koeman to thank following the Southampton manager's intervention in the tunnel when Arsene Wenger directed his frustrations at the official after Tuesday's match.

The Arsenal gaffer approached Mason to air his grievances following a goalless draw that featured a plethora of chances for the home side at the Emirates Stadium.

According to the Daily Mirror's John Cross, Wenger began a post-match tirade toward the referee in the tunnel and was heard saying: "It's always the same with you."

While it's unclear what exactly Wenger was referring to in his message to Mason, it evidently was enough to agitate his counterpart.

Just minutes after shaking Wenger's hand, Koeman reportedly interrupted the quarrel in defense of Mason: "No, it's always the same with you."

He apparently added, "You had 10 chances to score and couldn't take any of them, so why have a go at them?"

Now Wenger will wait to find out if his supposed rant was featured in Mason's post-match report, as such comments could see him face a misconduct charge.

However, Wenger appeared to side with Koeman's assessment during his post-match interview when he conceded that his side is suffering in front of goal despite creating more opportunities.

"The chances created were good but our finishing was poor and at the end of the day we paid for that," Wenger told reporters.

"We cannot fault our focus, desire and energy levels, but when you create the quality of chances we did tonight you have to win the game and that's what we didn't do."

Punishment for the incident would be yet another blow for the Arsenal boss following a result that saw his side slip two places down to fourth place in the table.
